Acupuncture: An Explanation
Acupuncture is a 5,000 year-old Chinese treatment. In modern acupuncture therapy, sterilized, micro-thin needles are inserted into the body to regulate qi. The traditional explanation for how acupuncture works relies on the traditional Chinese explanation of what causes diseases. Namely, when yin and yang are imbalanced in particular organs, or when the flow of qi is obstructed, the patient feels sick or senses pain. After the Chinese doctor feels the pulse, looks at the tongue, asks the patient questions and carries out other observations, he can determine exactly what is out of balance or where qi is obstructed. Once that is known, the doctor combines traditional theories and his experience to decide which herbs or needles can help. When yin and yang are restored to balance, or when the channels are no longer obstructed, the illness is resolved.
